Odia community opposes ISKCON's off-calendar Rath Yatra, seeks UNESCO protection
Bhubaneswar, June 28 -- Members of the Odia community expressed strong dissatisfaction over the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) organising Rath Yatra festivals outside the traditional calendar or tithis followed in Puri.
Odisha Forum stated that celebrating Rath Yatra outside the prescribed tithi followed by the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri disrespects centuries-old cultural traditions. They stated that at a press conference held at the Press Club of India in Delhi.
The forum highlighted that the fixed dates for the annual festival are deep-rooted in historical and scriptural frameworks. Deviating from these dates for regional convenience dilutes the cultural integrity of the heritage, as the forum argued.
