Bhubaneswar, Sept. 4 -- Nepal is confronting a devastating humanitarian catastrophe after a massive flood tore through Himalayan settlements on August 26, 2026, killing more than 1,250 people and leaving over 4,200 missing. Homes, vehicles, roads and bridges were swept away, while critical hydropower infrastructure suffered enormous damage.

Nepal has estimated the disaster's property and infrastructure losses at around $2.56 billion. The disaster was triggered when an ice and rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed a gigantic surge of water, debris and mud into the river system.
