Bhubaneswar, May 26 -- A small Kashmir village was shaken after the brutal rape and subsequent killing of a 12-year-old girl, sparking widespread anger and calls for swift justice.

Police say a local youth has been arrested as investigators work to piece together the motive and sequence of events.

Investigation and Arrest

As per sources, the girl went missing on May 23 and her body was later recovered several meters from home on May 24. Evidence at the scene included a copy of the Quran and the victim's shoes.

Budgam Police say investigators completed initial medico-legal and forensic procedures and questioned multiple suspects over 36 hours before detaining a local resident.
