Lionel Messi fined by MLS after neck-slapping incident with Quinn Sullivan
India, Aug. 22 -- Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer following an incident involving Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during their 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
MLS announced on Friday that Messi was fined an undisclosed amount for breaching the league's rules concerning contact with an opponent's face, head or neck. Inter Miami defender Ian Fray was also handed a fine for the same violation.
The incident occurred in stoppage time during a heated encounter. With play continuing elsewhere on the pitch, Messi walked toward the centre circle and confronted Sullivan. Following a brief exchange between the two players, Messi swung his hand and struck Sullivan on the back of the neck.
