Bhubaneswar, Sept. 11 -- The roof of a newly constructed Kalyan Mandap collapsed within 12 hours of being laid at Alanda panchayat under Nimapara block in Puri district of Odisha on Friday, raising serious questions over the quality of the construction work.

Sources said the Kalyan Mandap was being constructed with funds from the block. More than Rs 10 lakh had reportedly been sanctioned for the building. However, the roof gave way within hours of the concrete work, leaving the villagers concerned.

Villagers have alleged that substandard materials were used in the construction and that several irregularities occurred. They have demanded a high-level inquiry to determine what led to the collapse and assign responsibility for the incident...
