Bhubaneswar, Sept. 22 -- Natural calamities can be brutal for wildlife. Floods can destroy habitats and separate animals from their groups. The danger is not limited to smaller creatures. Even large animals can be swept away by powerful currents and carried several kilometres from where they were first caught in the water. While many perish, some survive because people reach them in time.

A recent incident in West Bengal's Teesta River is a striking example. A newborn elephant calf was swept away after becoming separated from its herd. The rescue that followed was driven by a group of local fishermen.
