From 'Talacher' to 'Raurkela': Odisha proposes changes in English spellings of several towns, districts
Bhubaneswar, June 4 -- In a significant step towards preserving Odisha's linguistic and cultural heritage, the state government on Thursday initiated the process of restoring the original Odia names of several districts, subdivisions, blocks, and urban centres by correcting their anglicised or distorted English spellings.
According to an official communication issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, the recommendations were finalised during the second meeting of a committee constituted to examine proposals for restoring original Odia place names.
The meeting was held on June 2 under the chairmanship of renowned author and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Pratibha Ray.
