Bhubaneswar, Sept. 20 -- A cough syrup trader was injured in a police encounter on the Rengali-Jangla-Pandoloi road in Sambalpur on Sunday after he allegedly opened fire at police during a vehicle check.

As per reports, police had received a tip-off about the illegal transportation of cough syrup and stopped a car for checking. The vehicle had no registration number and allegedly attempted to flee. During the attempt, it hit a tree.

The accused, identified as Pritam Biswal, allegedly fired four rounds at the police after the accident. Police then fired three rounds in retaliation to protect themselves, during which Biswal sustained a bullet injury to his right leg.
