Bhubaneswar, Aug. 8 -- For years, Birendra Mahakud and his wife Laxmi have been battling hardship, illness and helplessness. While Laxmi has been confined to her bed for years, Birendra has lost one of his legs and is now living with a disability. Yet, despite their difficult circumstances, the elderly couple is still waiting for basic government assistance.

The couple belongs to Bandhabhui village under Bonaigarh block in Sundargarh district. Once, they worked in other people's houses to support their family. Life was difficult, but they managed to get by. Then, one after another, tragedy struck.
