Guwahati: The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Assam government on a bail petition filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case linked to the death of Assam's renowned singer Zubeen Garg.

A Bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the state government and directed it to submit its reply within three weeks. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again at the end of July.

Mahanta, an event manager and chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, approached the apex court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application on May 29.
