SC issues notice on Assam govt plea in Deben Dutta murder case
Guwahati, Sept. 1 -- The Supreme Court has issued notices to the respondents on a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Assam government challenging the Gauhati High Court verdict in the Deben Dutta murder case.
The apex court has also condoned the delay in filing the petition, allowing the state's challenge to proceed. The respondents have been given four weeks to file their replies.
The Assam government approached the Supreme Court against the Gauhati High Court judgment delivered on July 30, 2025.
In its verdict, the High Court had altered the conviction from murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 Part II. It had also reduced the punishment from deat...
