Guwahati: The Mizoram government has introduced a strict screening mechanism for individuals seeking permission to consume alcohol for medical purposes under a newly launched special permit system in the state, where liquor remains largely prohibited.

The Excise and Narcotics Department recently began accepting applications for the permit, known as the "Red Card," which is intended exclusively for patients whose treatment requires limited alcohol consumption. Officials, however, said that no applications have been received since the scheme was announced.
