Meghalaya: Cabinet approves repeal of 2011 International Open University Act over UGC concerns
Guwahati, Aug. 19 -- The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the International Open University (Repeal) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the repeal of a 2011 Act that remained largely inactive for more than a decade.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the decision was taken after the government raised concerns over the proposed university's name and its compliance with University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.
According to Sangma, the legislation remained inactive until 2022, when some individuals came forward claiming authority under a power of attorney. The development led to a dispute and prompted the state government to examine the status of the Act.
