Imphal, Sept. 22 -- Manipur Police on Monday night stopped a large protest march in Imphal by groups demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated using 1951 as the base year before any fresh census is undertaken.

The demonstration was organised by local clubs, residents and Meira Paibi (women torchbearers) groups from 10 localities in Keishampat in Imphal West district. The protest followed recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicating that the Centre is considering the proposal to use 1951 as the base year for updating the NRC in Manipur.
