India, March 26 -- Unidentified armed men fired multiple rounds in Manipur's Churachandpur-Bishnupur border area on Wednesday night, prompting security forces to launch a joint operation.

The incident occurred near Phouljang/Gothol, causing panic after shots were aimed at a Phougakchao Awang Leikai army post.

"Unidentified armed men on Wednesday night fired several rounds of gunshots in the peripheral areas of Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts," officials said. Several rounds were fired near Phouljang/Gothol in Bishnupur district, bordering Churachandpur. "We are trying to locate the source of the firing and its target," officials added, noting that the fresh gunfire near the foothills triggered fear and panic among locals.
