Guwahati, July 6 -- First-time BJP legislator Habbey Teron was unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass announced Teron's election after noting that three nominations had been filed in his favour and that no other candidate had contested for the post.

"As there is no other nomination, I declare Dr Habbey Teron as the Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly," Dass said.

Teron represents the newly created Amri Assembly constituency, which was carved out during the 2023 delimitation exercise.
