Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said children born out of live-in relationships would receive full legal recognition and equal rights over parental property under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) passed by the Assam Assembly.

Addressing the media after the passage of the Uniform Civil Code Bill, the Chief Minister said the legislation contains provisions aimed at ensuring equal legal protection and inheritance rights for children irrespective of the nature of their parents' relationship.

Sarma said the proposed law seeks to regulate live-in relationships through mandatory registration while safeguarding the rights of children born from such unions.
