Guwahati, Sept. 1 -- The Central government on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking to quash criminal cases registered against individuals for their participation in the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led student protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

The matter was mentioned before a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who sought an urgent listing of an interlocutory application (IA).

"It's regarding that protest, for the purpose of FIRs to be quashed etc. Article 142 (of the Constitution), we are invoking," Mehta told the Bench while requesting that the matter be listed at the earliest.
