Assam toll roads in shambles: Potholes plague NH-27 despite regular toll collection
Guwahati, Aug. 30 -- Motorists travelling along key stretches of National Highway 27 (NH-27), formerly known in large parts as NH-31, are facing severe inconvenience as large potholes and damaged road surfaces continue to plague the routes - despite toll taxes being collected from road users at multiple points along the corridor.
As of 2026, Assam has 12 operational toll gates functioning under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Among the stretches drawing the sharpest criticism from commuters is the corridor from Khanpara in Guwahati to Nagaon on NH-27, where motorists must pay toll tax at two plazas - Nazirakhat toll plaza in Sonapur and Raha toll plaza - both located on the same NH-37/New NH-27 highway corridor.
