Guwahati, July 12 -- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state government distributed 1.34 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of rice free of cost to nearly 70 lakh families in July under its food security programme. He also announced that subsidised masoor dal and sugar will be reintroduced through the public distribution system (PDS) from August 2026.

Sharing the update on X, Sarma said the "Anna Sewa Se Jan Sewa" initiative reflects the government's commitment to ensuring food security for every household and is inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the Chief Minister, 1,34,237 MT of rice was supplied free of cost to around 70 lakh beneficiary families across Assam during July.
