Guwahati, July 10 -- Assam plans to recruit 33,240 healthcare personnel and expand its medical education network under a wide-ranging health package announced in the 2026-27 State Budget, alongside a proposal to post an MBBS doctor at every Health Sub-Centre across the state.

While presenting the Budget in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the government also intends to open four new medical colleges in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai and Bajali.

If the proposal is implemented, Assam's network of medical colleges will increase to 28. The state currently has 14 operational institutions, while 10 others are being built at different stages.
