Doomdooma: Assam's Tinsukia district, known for its tea gardens and oil fields, is also home to large areas of Simolu (Bombax ceiba) trees, which are now drawing attention for their tourism and livelihood potential.
These trees are found across river areas and forest edges. During spring, they bloom with red flowers, creating noticeable landscapes.
Despite their presence, Simolu groves have not been included in regular tourism activities. They also support local biodiversity and traditional livelihoods.
Experts say the fibre from the tree's pods is used in rural households for filling pillows and cushions. The trees also attract birds, bees, and other pollinators during the flowering season.
