Dibrugarh, Sept. 14 -- Senior United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadre Anoljoy Asom surrendered before Tinsukia Police on Monday.

According to sources, Anoljoy had been staying in the Yajong area of Myanmar for a prolonged period, where he reportedly married a Burmese woman.

Sources described Anoljoy as a senior member of ULFA-I and said his surrender could further weaken the organisation.

Security forces have been trying to persuade cadres and youths associated with ULFA-I to return to the mainstream.

"The return of cadres to the mainstream is a positive sign for the security forces and agencies working for peace and stability in the region," a police official said.
