Assam: River Beki swells after Bhutan's Kurichhu dam releases excess water
Bajali, Sept. 1 -- Water levels in the Beki River have risen following the release of excess water from Bhutan's Kurichhu Hydroelectric Project, prompting authorities to issue a caution for residents of riparian and low-lying areas.
The rise in water levels has triggered concern among residents living along the river, with fears of possible flooding bringing back memories of the devastating floods of 2004 and 2007.
The district administration has been monitoring the situation since around 5 a.m. and has issued an alert for people living in riverine areas. Public announcements and loudspeaker messages have advised residents to stay away from the river and move to safer locations if necessary.
