Assam: Over 15 stranded, 100 cattle trapped as flash floods hit Jonai
Guwahati, June 29 -- Rising floodwaters triggered by continuous rainfall and a sudden swell in the Dikari River have wreaked havoc in Assam's Jonai, stranding more than 15 people and around 100 cattle on a riverine char while inundating several villages.
The worst-hit area is Koraibari Char in Telam, where floodwaters surged into the island early on Sunday, cutting off all access routes and leaving residents stranded. The swift current and steadily rising water level have made evacuation difficult.
According to local sources, the marooned residents have been unable to leave the char since Sunday morning. Nearly 100 cattle are also trapped on the island, raising concerns over their safety as flood conditions continue to worsen.
