Guwahati: The water level of the Kopili river rose sharply after seven gates of the Khandong dam in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district were opened, prompting authorities to issue alerts for residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas.

According to the Central Water Commission's hydrological data as of 8 pm on Monday, the river was flowing at 59.55 metres against the danger level of 60.50 metres. The highest flood level recorded for the river is 62.20 metres, attained on June 18, 2022.

Reports from downstream areas indicate that foamy and fast-flowing waters were being witnessed at several stretches of the river following increased discharge from the reservoir.
