Guwahati, May 14 -- Chandramohan Patowary, a veteran legislator and Tihu MLA, has been appointed Pro-tem Speaker of Assam's 16th Legislative Assembly.

Patowary, 71, is one of the Assembly's most senior members and was elected MLA for the sixth time.After winning the Tihu seat election in 2026, he achieved his sixth term, having previously won in 1985, 1991, 1996, 2006, and 2016. He joined the BJP in 2014, after leaving the Asom Gana Parishad.

Following the creation of a new Legislative Assembly, a Pro-tem Speaker is appointed to lead the House's proceedings until a full-time Speaker is chosen.
