Guwahati, June 29 -- Personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Dirang police and local residents joined forces on Sunday to contain a forest fire that threatened residential areas near the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports in Arunachal Pradesh's West Kameng district.

The fire started at around 2.30 pm near the Jyoti Nagar residential complex of the 30th Battalion SSB and spread over nearly 300 metres, putting nearby houses and public assets at risk.

Following an alert, the 30th Battalion SSB dispatched its rapid rescue team and other personnel to the location, becoming the first agency to begin firefighting operations.
