India, Sept. 9 -- World Vision has called for a broader approach to literacy that links reading and writing with life skills, environmental awareness and livelihoods, as the organisation marked International Literacy Day 2026 under the theme "Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity."
Literacy Beyond Reading and Writing
World Vision said effective literacy education should retain core skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, reading and writing while helping children apply them to everyday challenges. The organisation said this approach can strengthen critical thinking, communication, decision-making and understanding of environmental responsibilities, particularly for children in vulnerable communities.
