India, July 28 -- A landmark ruling by the UK Supreme Court has strengthened legal protections against cross border digital surveillance, allowing a long running lawsuit over alleged state sponsored spyware to move toward trial.
Court Rejects Bahrain's Immunity Claim
The UK Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the Bahraini government, which had argued that it was protected by state immunity in a civil lawsuit brought by two Bahraini political activists living in London. The claim alleges that the activists, Dr. Saeed Shehabi and Moosa Mohammed, suffered psychological harm after their computers were infected with FinSpy spyware in 2011 while they were in the United Kingdom.
