India, July 20 -- Gloria, a 20-year-old South Sudanese refugee in Uganda's Bidibidi settlement, is rebuilding her life through community support after surviving domestic abuse and abandonment by her entire family. She arrived in Uganda as a teenager in 2016 and entered a marriage at age seventeen in 2024 to escape poverty.

Hardship and Domestic Violence Gloria's marriage brought significant physical and emotional abuse from her husband, who struggled with alcohol addiction. Her mother-in-law further aggravated the situation by mocking her for the family's financial struggles throughout her pregnancy. By September 2025, Gloria had given birth to a son, yet the environment only became more volatile.
