India, Sept. 23 -- South Sudanese authorities must safeguard civic freedoms and ensure people can participate without fear ahead of the country's scheduled national elections on December 22, Amnesty International said after the transitional government was dissolved.
Calls for rights protections
Amnesty's Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Tigere Chagutah, urged authorities to guarantee freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly during the electoral period.
The organisation said voters and candidates should be able to participate without discrimination or arbitrary restrictions. It also called for an end to intimidation targeting journalists, civil society groups and political opponents.
