India, Aug. 12 -- Somalia's worsening drought and shrinking humanitarian aid are pushing vulnerable communities deeper into hunger, with Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) warning that waiting for an official famine declaration could cost lives. In Baidoa, southwestern Somalia, half of the young children screened by MSF are acutely malnourished.
Malnutrition Surges in Baidoa
MSF said its teams have screened more than 21,000 children under five in Baidoa since the beginning of 2026, with acute malnutrition affecting around half of those assessed. One in four children screened in displacement camps was found to be severely malnourished.
