India, Sept. 24 -- Somalia is facing a worsening hunger crisis, with millions expected to experience severe food insecurity as humanitarian assistance declines and a potentially powerful El Nino threatens to bring floods, disease and displacement during the October to December rainy season.
Hunger reaches critical levels
An estimated 5.4 million people are projected to face Crisis-level hunger or worse between October and December 2026, up from 4.4 million during the same period last year. Those facing Emergency-level hunger are expected to increase from 921,000 to 1.48 million.
