New York, May 14 -- New data from the IPC, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification developed by UN agencies, warns that nearly 20 million people in Sudan face high levels of acute food insecurity. It is estimated that this year, 825,000 children will suffer from severe acute malnutrition, a condition carrying a real risk of death. This represents a 7% increase compared to 2025 and is 25% higher than pre-conflict levels.

The hunger crisis is worsening with the onset of the rainy season (May to September), which coincides with the lean season. Rainfall, combined with insecurity and limited access, further hampers access to food, agricultural production and essential services.
