India, Aug. 27 -- Osman Kavala's nearly nine-year imprisonment has become a defining case for Turkiye's human rights record after the European Court of Human Rights ordered his immediate release and declared his conviction null and void.
Landmark European Court Ruling
The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Kavala's continued detention violated his rights to a fair trial, freedom of expression and freedom of association. The court also found that his aggravated life sentence amounted to inhuman and degrading treatment and concluded that Turkish authorities had acted in bad faith.
