India, Aug. 25 -- An intense El Nino weather event could drive up to three million people from their homes across East Africa by the end of 2026, with Somalia and Kenya facing the largest share of potential displacement, according to a new analysis by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
Flooding Threatens Four Countries
The DRC's report, El Nino Through a Displacement Lens: Mobility Outlook in East Africa, examines flood risks in Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda. Its modeling estimates possible flood-related displacement ranging from 750,000 people under a lower-impact scenario to three million in the worst case.
