India, Sept. 21 -- A combination of a powerful El Nino, disrupted shipping routes and shrinking humanitarian food aid funding could push millions more people into acute food insecurity, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) said on September 18.
El Nino Raises Food Security Risks
The IRC said the El Nino event is expected to peak between November 2026 and January 2027 and could become one of the strongest in recent history. The UN World Food Programme estimates the weather pattern alone could push 49 million additional people into acute food insecurity by the end of 2027, taking the global total to 274 million across 45 countries.
