India, Oct. 8 -- More than 1,900 children in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have lost or been separated from parents or caregivers since an Ebola outbreak was declared in May, UNICEF said, highlighting the severe impact of the disease on children beyond infection and death.

UNICEF has identified 1,581 affected children in Ituri and 322 in North Kivu as of September 28. The agency warned that the actual number is likely higher because the figures cover areas where UNICEF works with provincial social affairs teams.
The outbreak has also left 214 children living or working on the streets in Bunia in need of protection, exposing them to increased risks of infection, exploitation and violence.
