India, Sept. 7 -- For Fakhria, a sewing machine purchased with European Union-funded cash assistance has become the foundation of a livelihood, helping her support seven children after conflict forced her family from their home.
From displacement to desperation
Fakhria and her family fled their home when fighting reached the outskirts of Sana'a in 2016 and eventually settled in a displacement camp in Lahj governorate. With her husband too ill to work as a daily labourer, the family struggled to afford necessities.
Fakhria withdrew her children from school as the household's financial situation deteriorated.
At their lowest point, the family was forced to rely on begging.
