India, Aug. 20 -- The International Rescue Committee has launched an emergency response in western Colombia after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake killed more than 250 people, injured over 3,500 and destroyed upwards of 45,000 homes.

Humanitarian Needs Deepen

The earthquake struck Choco and Valle del Cauca, where more than 1.2 million people already required humanitarian assistance before the disaster. Thousands of families have been displaced, while damaged roads and infrastructure have complicated efforts to deliver aid, particularly in remote communities accessible only by boat or air.

The scale of destruction has intensified pressure on populations already affected by poverty, conflict and limited access to essential services.
