New Delhi, Nov. 4 -- Democrats are ahead of Republicans in the race to win a majority in the US Senate and the House of Representatives -- the upper and lower chambers of the US Congress.

Early US midterm election results trend showed Democratic candidates won the Senate race in Georgia, Virginia and New Hampshire as polls closed in several states early Wednesday (IST).

Democrats flipped a Senate seat in North Carolina, while the Republican candidate clinched victory in Florida. A razor-thin race is expected in Iowa.

In the 100-member Senate, the majority is 51 seats, while in the House of Representatives, the half-way mark stands at 218.
