New Delhi, Sept. 1 -- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (September 1) said Tehran was ready to return to a ceasefire agreement reached with the United States in June if Washington also honours its commitments, signalling a possible opening for diplomacy after the two sides resumed exchanging fire.

Pezeshkian made the remarks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan, a day after the US and Iran exchanged attacks for the first time in weeks.

"If the United States returns to its commitments" under the June memorandum, Iran "will immediately take reciprocal action", according to the Iranian presidency's website.
