New Delhi, Sept. 21 -- The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation into the alleged suicide of a 22-year-old IIT Bombay student, an incident that has triggered massive campus protests, a police case against a professor, and sweeping demands for institutional reform.

Sahil Ravindra Wakode, a second-year BTech student in the Energy Science and Engineering department hailing from Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in Hostel Number 4 on Friday evening.

Following a complaint filed by Wakode's parents, the Powai police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday against Professor Suryanarayan Doolla.
