New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- Domestic travel can mean very different expenses for Indian households depending on why they are travelling. A holiday, pilgrimage, medical visit, or shopping trip can have sharply different costs.

The findings come from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's (MoSPI) 'Domestic Tourism Expenditure' survey, conducted from July 2025 to June 2026 as part of the NSS 80th round.

The survey captures the movement of one or more household members to a main destination for a leading purpose and estimates expenditure on domestic tourism at the national and State/UT levels.
