4,192 cases pending against MPs, MLAs; 14 out of 28 chief ministers face serious criminal charges: Supreme Court told
New Delhi, Aug. 18 -- The Supreme Court was told that there are more than 4,000 cases pending against MPs and MLAs across the country while 14 out of 28 chief ministers of Indian states have serious criminal charges against them. This fact came to light in a report submitted to the apex court by senior advocate Vijay Hansaria, who is the amicus curiae in a public-interest ligitation (PIL) which is seeking expeditious disposal of criminal cases against Indian lawmakers.
The report says that around 251 of the 543 members of the Lok Sabha, and 75 of the 233 members of the Rajya Sabha have criminal cases against them.
The PIL was filed by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.
