Raiganj, Sept. 22 -- A youth was seriously injured after being allegedly stabbed by a restaurant owner in Islampur town of North Dinajpur district on Monday night. Police arrested the accused, identified as Chiranjit Paul, and produced him before a court seeking police custody.
The injured youth, Ramjan Ali, suffered a deep cut on his throat. He was initially admitted to Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital in a critical condition and was later shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri for advanced treatment.
According to residents, Chiranjit, who runs a restaurant in Islampur, had allegedly taken some money from Ramjan. On Monday night, Ramjan met him near the town library seeking repayment.
Chiranjit allegedly boarded Ramjan's motorcycle as a pillion rider and asked him to proceed to another place, assuring him that he would arrange the money there.
While they were travelling, Chiranjit allegedly attacked Ramjan from behind with a sharp knife. Ramjan fell from the motorcycle. Residents rushed him to the hospital. Dhendup Sherpa, Additional Superintendent of Police, said the accused had been arrested and produced before the court, while police had sought his custody. An investigation has been initiated into the incident.
