Kolkata, Sept. 17 -- The iconic Writers' Buildings, once synonymous with the seat of power in Bengal, is soon set to be abuzz with activity, with Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani likely to visit the historic secretariat on September 24, as the state government explores a tie-up with the group for its renovation and restoration.
The group is expected to contribute around Rs 120 crore from its CSR funds towards the project. Adani Group officials have already inspected the building, while an architect engaged for the exercise has also assessed the premises.
It has been under renovation since the secretariat moved to Nabanna in October 2013, with further decisions on the tie-up expected after talks between the government and the group.
Heritage conservation is a major challenge, with PWD officials pointing out that earlier renovation phases resulted in the loss or destruction of some historical features. The current exercise is therefore expected to balance administrative requirements with preservation of the building's architectural character.

Meanwhile, PWD officials are racing to make parts of the 250-year-old secretariat functional by October. Offices are being prepared for Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, at least six ministers and senior bureaucrats, with some officials already using the building. The CM's secretariat is being readied on the first floor, alongside the chief secretary's office and spaces for other ministers and the DGP.
However, the October target will cover only immediate works. Renovation of the Cabinet Room and Rotunda is yet to begin, while PWD sources estimate that less than half of the overall revamp has been done over 13 years.
