Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- A woman was detained after allegedly confronting former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside her Kalighat residence on Tuesday evening, carrying a knife, raising concerns over the security of a leader with Z+ security cover.
In a complaint e-mailed to Kalighat police, Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) joint general secretary Dola Sen alleged that the woman approached MAITC supremo Mamata Banerjee aggressively.
According to Sen's complaint, the allegedly intoxicated woman hurled abuses, claimed to be Banerjee's niece and lay down on the road, creating a disturbance.
Sen questioned how a woman allegedly carrying a knife could approach a leader with Z-plus security cover and raised suspicions of a larger conspiracy.
The complaint included three video attachments and urged the police to take cognisance of the material and also initiate appropriate action.
The incident occurred as Banerjee was heading to inaugurate Kalighat Milan Sangha's Durga Puja, which went ahead after the disturbance.
Expressing concern over the incident, MAITC leader Saket Gokhale questioned whether it was a planned conspiracy, posting: "Was this a planned conspiracy by BJP because Didi is determined to finish them off in Delhi?" He also questioned whether the police would act on the complaint.
Meanwhile, MAITC MP Kirti Azad alleged a breakdown of law and order in the state, stating: "There is no rule of law in West Bengal." He also alleged that BJP goons sponsored the attack and questioned the legitimacy of the Assembly election results.
