India, June 21 -- West Bengal Day was celebrated at Lok Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan) in Mumbai on Saturday, June 20. The celebration was inaugurated by the Jisnu Dev Barma, Governor of Maharastra and was attended by members of the Bengali community living in Mumbai, who presented various cultural performances to mark the occasion. During the programme, dignitaries highlighted the historical and cultural significance of West Bengal Day and emphasised the contributions of the Bengali community to the nation's social and cultural life. Traditionally, West Bengal Day had often been observed on April 14 or 15, coinciding with the Bengali New Year (Poila Boishakh). However, in recent years, June 20 has also been observed as West Bengal Day following decisions taken by the state government. The celebration in Mumbai reflected the growing recognition of the occasion beyond West Bengal, bringing together Bengalis residing in Maharashtra to commemorate their heritage and culture.
